1925 SPRINGFIELD ROLLS ROYCE PICCADILLY ROADSTER

1925 SPRINGFIELD  ROLLS ROYCE PICCADILLY ROADSTER CHASSIS S77LK

BY 1925 THE GHOST WAS ALSO PRODUCED IN, SPRINGFIELD, USA, LIGHTLY MODIFIED TO SUIT LOCAL CONDITIONS AND BODIED WITH RATHER MORE FLAMBOYANT COACHWORK THAN THE UK VERSIONS; THE QUALITY WAS COMPARABLE EITHER SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC.

WHILST UK CARS WERE PURCHASED FROM THE FACTORY IN CHASSIS ONLY FORM, TO BE BODIED BY THE CLIENT’S FAVOUERED COACHBUILDER, THE SPRINGFIELD CARS WERE FACTORY BODIED IN A VARIETY OF STYLES, THIS, THE ‘PICCADILLY ROADSTER’, WAS BY FAR THE SPORTIEST AND MOST ATTRACTIVE DESIGN, APPEARING SMALLER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS.

THIS CAR,WAS DELIVERED ON 15TH APRIL 1925 TO SAMUEL S. CONRAD, OWNER OF A DEPARTMENT STORE IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. CONRAD WAS A WELL KNOWN YACHTSMAN WHO IN 1919 HAD PURCHASED THE POWER CRUISING YACHT, ‘HELLANTHUS’ FROM CAPTAIN NAT HERRISHOFF, ‘THE WIZARD OF BRISTOL’.

IN ADDITION TO BEEN ONE OF THE LAST RIGHT HAND DRIVE CARS BUILT, USING MANY OF THE FINAL SPRINGFIELD DEVELPOMENTS, THIS IS ONE OF THE LAST USING THE OUTSTANDING 4 SPEED GEARBOX, MAKING IT ONE OF THE ULTIMATE SPRINGFIELD SILVER GHOSTS.

IN THE 1930’S, THE CAR TRAVELLED WEST AND RECEIVED THE ‘CALIFORNIA TREATMENT’ OF WHAT WE NOW CONSIDER GRUESOME  P1 STYLE TINWORK, FRONT BRAKES, 21” WHEELS AND UGLY DOUBLE BUMPER BARS.

IN 1939 IT WAS DELIVERED TO THE WORKSHOP OF RADMAN AUTOS IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA FOR REPAIRS. THEY DID THE WORK BUT WERE NOT PAID AND FINALLY SOLD THE CAR IN 1944 TO DON BRINGOLD WHO NOTED THE CAR, ‘STARTED IMMEDIATELY’ AFTER IT’S PROTRACTED STORAGE AND USED IT EXTENSIVELY, HAPPILY DRIVING TO INDIANAPOLIS AND BACK IN 1946 TO WATCH THE INDY500; A ROUND TRIP OF 2000 MILES

HAVING DIFFICULTY OBTAINING TYRES POST WAR, THE CAR WAS SOLD IN 1949 TO LONG TIME GHOST COLLECTOR, FRED BUESS, WHO STORED IT TILL 1979, THEN STARTED A CHASSIS UP RESTORATION. THE RENOVATION WORK SOON STALLED AND THE DISMANTLED CAR LANGUISHED UNTIL 2009, WHEN PURCHASED BY ROBIN ONSOIEN WHO COMMISSIONED A FULL ‘AMERICAN’ MAINLY COSMETIC RESTORATION TO ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION

THE CURRENT OWNER ACQUIRED THE CAR IN 2015, IMPORTING IT TO THE UK AND COMMISSIONED RESPECTED SPECIALIST AJ GLEW Ltd TO COMPLETE THE MECHANICAL RESTORATION, INCLUDING A FULL ENGINE REBUILD.

RETAINING THE ORIGINAL BODY, CHASSIS, ENGINE, GEARBOX & SCUTTLE, THE CAR IS ‘MATCHING NUMBERS’, ‘ON THE BUTTON’ AND READY TO BE DRIVEN ANYWHERE; THE DISCRETE ADDITION OF A MODERN OVERDRIVE ALLOWS  RELAXED CRUISING ON TODAY’S ROADS.
